Print Rental Program

The Pearson Print Rental Program allows students to rent textbooks through the same campus stores and online retailers they use today.

All rental retail prices for eligible Pearson titles are the same across participating stores and online retailers due to agency pricing, which provides much-needed price protection and low, affordable prices for students.

How does the Print Rental Program work?

Textbooks in the program are distributed via a consignment model. Participating stores obtain rental units and report rental transactions to Pearson through their chosen distribution partner.

Under the terms of the Print Rental Program, books are rented to students via partners for one term. Students are required to return the books at the end of the term, at which point the book is again rented to another student for one term, and so on.

Students who do not return the book at the end of the term will be charged a non-return fee.

When there is no longer a rental market for the book, the book is either returned by the distributor to Pearson or disposed of in accordance with Pearson instructions.

If print rentals are not an option at a particular store, the store can still sell access codes (i.e., Revel™, MyLab™, or Mastering™ access codes) or rent eBooks via digital partners, such as RedShelf and Vital Source®.

What is the positive impact on students?

Is it accurate to say printed textbooks in the Print Rental Program can only be rented — Pearson will not sell them?

Yes. Books in the Print Rental Program will not be sold in traditional print formats.

However, a student who is interested in keeping the title at the end of the term may do so and pay a non-return fee equal to the list price minus the rental fee the student has already paid. Students will also be able to obtain all digital options for the titles, including eBook downloads, eBook rentals, and MyLab, Mastering, and Revel access cards (as available).

Can MyLab, Mastering, or Revel access be packaged with rental textbooks?

What if a student wants to have access to the content beyond the course?

Can students use financial aid to rent a textbook in this program?

Whether students can use financial aid depends on their institution, as these policies vary by institution. If the financial aid policy at your institution requires students to purchase materials through the campus bookstore and the institution participates in the Print Rental Program, students can use their financial aid to cover the rental fee.

If a store doesn’t participate in the Print Rental Program, the store will still be able to sell digital access to the eBook versions and/or MyLab, Mastering, or Revel access codes for titles in the Print Rental Program. Students who are required to use their financial aid at the campus bookstore will be able to purchase access to this content.
