Work-based Learning FAQs
In light of the recent announcements in relation to COVID-19 and school and college closures, we have put together some questions and answers that we hope will help explain our current plans for continuing with standards verification, and our position on assessment for Work-based Learning qualifications.
Last updated: 26 March 2021
Work-based qualifications are primarily designed to support progression to employment, rather than to further or higher education. However, where learners are due to complete this summer and have been prevented from doing so, we have worked with Ofqual and relevant professional or standard-setting bodies to identify any qualifications where it might still be possible to generate a Qualification Teacher Assessed Grade (QTAG).
Where this is not suitable, adaptations to assessments or reduced assessment will be supported as long as this does not undermine the integrity of the qualifications and where these can still take place, even though centre-based provision has been/was suspended. In cases where qualifications directly signal occupational competence or function as a licence to practise, it may not be safe or meet employers’ requirements to do either of these and there may be no option but to wait until normal assessments can happen again.
In the first instance, assessments should continue where they can, standards verification will continue for Apprenticeships and qualifications part of an Apprenticeship but remain remote. In all scenarios, all content must be taught. Where it is necessary to support learners due to complete this summer, we can continue to support with adaptations to assessments, or reduced assessment if necessary and safe to do so. We have produced sector-specific guides to support you with adaptations or identified where assessments must be delayed.
