Our Online Learning Units (OLUs) provide opportunities for students to feel better prepared for university life and build the skills and confidence they need to achieve more successful outcomes.
Wonkhe and Pearson recently surveyed more than 5,000 students on belonging at university and found that just 69% of students agree they feel they belong at their university1. The state of students’ self-assessed mental health was also consistently and dramatically associated with their sense of belonging. Our Online Learning Units are designed to help students with transitioning to university and being aware of their mental health.

Created by our experienced learning design experts in response to research undertaken during the height of the pandemic and recently updated to reflect the new hybrid approach, each engaging, student-focused Unit acknowledges the traditional challenges of transitioning into higher education while addressing the newer challenges brought about by COVID-19.
The interactive, self-paced content encourages students to think critically about their own skill set and situation – fostering confidence as they progress through their higher education journey.

What do the Units provide?
Designed to support stronger engagement, higher retention and more successful outcomes, each Unit is easy to integrate alongside your existing provision and gives students ongoing, 24/7 access to insight, guidance and support to help them take control of their learning experience.
- Interactive learning and activities provided in the Units give students access to development opportunities that they can draw on at different points of their HE experience (including pre-sessionally, during the induction period, first semester and beyond).
- Each Unit provides around 2 hours of interactive content – built around an engaging learning design to deliver a great user experience – to help students develop and improve important skills and behaviours as they start their higher education journey.
- Each Unit encourages students to think critically about their own skill set and situation. They highlight the importance of independent learning, identifying and addressing skill gaps and engaging with and contributing to the academic community.
What does each Unit offer?
These Units have been developed in conjunction with experts in each field, with content peer-reviewed by practitioners, academics and students to ensure they are of the highest quality.
Each unit covers important areas to support student success, including: what to expect; assessing skills; finding support; managing studies; learning with others; and learning in a digital environment. Many tools are also embedded to support students' ongoing development, such as action plans, reflective journals, and checklists.
