What do the application stages look like?
If successful at the interview stage, we will send out a conditional offer letter and any training material that needs to be completed.
The offer of the role is subject to the successful completion of training, background and reference checks. Once this is approved, you will be offered a contract.
Unfortunately, we will only process applicants on to the next step of the application if they meet the initial criteria set on the application form.
If you would like to discuss this further, we ask that you raise a query via https://support.pearson.com/uk/s/tutoring.
If you have not heard from us, please assume you have been unsuccessful.
We will contact anyone who we would like to keep on our system for potential use in the future.
What are the background checks?
How many hours will I be expected to work?
You will need to make a commitment of at least 6 hours per week during peak hours (08:00- 10:00 and 14:30 - 18:00) and the tutoring will take place during school hours and in the evening.
The more flexible you can be, the more work you are likely to get.
Once you have been accepted as a tutor, it will be possible to accept tutoring blocks (15 sessions each of one hour duration) you wish to deliver, to suit your availability.
How long does the role last for? Is it seasonal?
Tutoring will be in the highest demand during school term dates. However, there may be some schools that request tutoring sessions during school holidays. You have the choice to only apply for tutoring blocks which fit your availability. The role will last at least for the academic year 2022-2023.
Which qualifications do I require?
You will need to hold a degree, teaching qualification and have 2 years' teaching experience in your relevant subject.
No, you do not need to have taught online before as we will provide training. However, you should be comfortable using online technology.
This is a requirement set by the Department for Education as part of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP). We therefore require you to be UK based in order to deliver the tutoring sessions. We cannot accept applicants who are UK citizens but based internationally.
Can I be an Assessment Associate at the same time?
Yes, if your role as an AA does not require access to live papers for the subject or qualification (any awarding body) for which you are delivering tutoring and you can commit to 6 hours per week.
You will need to keep the AA team updated on schools you tutor for via your AA Conflict of Interest process.
Will I be able to apply if I have seen live papers in the past?
Yes. If the past live papers have subsequently been marked and results published, then this is not a barrier to providing tutoring.
What will online sessions look like?
Once you've signed your contract to be a Pearson Tutor, you'll be invited to join Bramble, our tutoring platform partner.
There, you'll create a profile and you'll be notified daily of jobs you can apply for. When you've been confirmed by a school for a job, it'll appear in your schedule, and from there, you'll join sessions.
Bramble is a platform designed specifically to support online tutoring and features an interactive whiteboard, where you upload resources for each session. You can talk with your pupils and share cameras (where available) to see each other. All participants in a session can use the tools to mark up or type on all the pages.
All sessions are recorded, and you can export all the resources, complete with markup and annotations, at the end of each session. Pupils and their teachers can review the recording and the resources for that session.
You can expect to be teaching students from schools all over the country and sessions could be with up to 3 students, depending on the school's needs.
What is the online platform called?
Your tutoring bookings and progress will be managed via Bramble’s online platform. You will be introduced to this by our team and trained in how to use it.
We encourage you to use your professional judgement where necessary to cater for the needs of each student, making full use of the resources provided to support consistent, high-quality provision.
Tutoring will take place in blocks of 15 sessions. Our plan is that, prior to starting each block, you would communicate with the students’ teacher to discuss the required focus of the tutoring, any specific needs the students may have and how you might be able to support these as their tutor.
Ongoing communication of this type between the tutor and teacher will be highly beneficial to learning outcomes.
Do I need to be self Employed?
We will only be engaging with self-employed tutors.
How much do I get paid for a Session?
You will be paid £32 for each Session of tutoring you deliver, paid weekly in arrears, based on completed valid sessions.
